The Players is a theatre company originally created to perform at and host the Shakespeare Festival 2023, originally in Edelesborough.
This festival is a yearly event, first performed at the beautiful, magical venue, St Mary the Virgin or "Church on the Hill", Edlesborough.
The Company is professionally run, although amateur, and has a performing Company of talented local actors.
We enjoy pushing the boundaries of amateur and community theatre - performing Shakespeare from First Folio scripts, the way Shakespeare's Company did, as well as tackling plays or projects rarely performed by traditional amateur groups.
Thanks to this approach, we can challenge ourselves, step out of our comfort "acting" zones, as well as provide entertaining shows and unusually performed productions for our audience.
We happily welcome new Company members both on stage, off stage or behind it, so please contact us if you would like to be involved. Our Company includes members from many local groups and our flexible approach to rehearsals means that you don't have to give up one love for another - we want to bring the community groups together and support each other.
The Shakespeare Festival was the idea of Edelesborough resident and Director, Sarah Jones (The Players Theatre Company) who wanted to give back something to her community.
With support from the Friends of the Church, The Church Conservation Trust, Edlesborough Parish Council & local businesses, the aim of the festival was to bring together local actors to perform Shakespeare the way it was performed in his day, using the First Folio.
This original text and the performance that it allows the actors to give, means that you, the audience, are experiencing a Shakespearian play that is close to what the audiences of his time would have enjoyed.
All profits from the 2023 Festival went to the Friends of the Church for repairs and renovation of this historical site.
